Coaching is such a negative endeavor

The nature of the profession demands that you are constantly looking for things that are wrong (negatives) so that you can fix them. In addition to that, a coach is constantly bombarded with outside criticism and second guessing. So much negativity…..it really is hard to remain positive in such a negative environment.

I think that making a conscious effort to find positives on a daily basis is important to anyone’s mental health, especially a coach or educator. Whenever I am asked ‘How are you today?’, my reply is either ‘Better than I deserve’ or ‘As long as I have a choice, I’m doing great’

By replying ‘better than I deserve‘, I am taking just a second to remind myself of just how many blessings I have in my life….it’s just crazy to me how blessed I have been.

By replying ”as long as I have a choice, I’m doing great’, I am reminding myself that I have control of what I am thinking and that I need to use that control to help myself have a great day.

With this website, we are closing in on 100 subscribers. I have a choice on how I want to look at that. I can look at it and say ‘out of the thousands and thousands of coaches, parents, and players scrolling around on the Internet, we don’t even have a hundred that subscribe to this website!’ Or, I can look at it and say ‘Holy crap!! I can’t believe we have nearly a hundred people that want to read what I put on here! That’s amazing to me.’

As long as I have a choice, I’m going to look at it in the best way possible……thank you to those that have subscribed and thanks for the many positive comments and support.

Best of luck to those of you in the middle of district play, I’m sure there are some huge games tonight! I haven’t decided which one I will get out and see yet, but I will be out lurking in a gym somewhere tonight……much more relaxed than those of you on the bench!
